Hlungwani Explains Why Pirates Were Denied Penalty In PLK Win

Orlando Pirates were correctly denied a penalty in their Betway Premiership clash against Polokwane City, according to former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani.

Luxolo Badi, who was the match official on the evening, had initially pointed to the spot after the incident.

But after close consultation with his assistant referee, the decision was overturned with Badi awarding a drop ball to Rise and Shine instead as no offence was committed.

“The Principal” has since dissected what transpired, equally applauding Badi for taking the correct measure in not awarding the Buccaneers a spot kick.

“We have a hand ball appeal here and the referee was Luxolo Badi,” Hlungwani said on Soccerzone.

“Makgopa heads the ball that goes and deflect on [Tlou] Nkwe.

“There’s the referee Luxolo Badi indicating penalty there.

“The ball is headed by Makgopa. It starts from the body there and from the body it goes to the hand.

“And if the ball starts from the body to your hand, there’s no offence committed because as you can see that there’s no deliberate handball. The player tried to jump.

“So, correct decision by Luxolo Badi not to award a penalty.”
