Hlungwani Gives Verdict On Mudau-Mmodi Incident

Former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani has explained why Mamelodi Sundowns right-back Khuliso Mudau was not penalised for his contact on Kaizer Chiefs winger Pule Mmodi.

Mudau was seen pushing Mmodi inside the box, while the game was still tied at 0-0 in the first half with referee Olani Kwinda not blowing for a foul on the Bafana Bafana international.

Hlungwani says that was because of the impact or lack thereof of the contact that Mudau was not cautioned.

“You can see Mmodi going at Mudau and Mudau through momentum he is trying to fall he makes contact,” said Hlungwani on SABC’s Soccer Zone.

“But does his contact make an impact on the ability of Mmodi to play the ball? If you look at it u can see that there is no impact. He [Mmodi] is having full control of the ball as to what the does with the ball, he takes a shot and unfortunately he misses.

“And you can see that Mmodi doesn’t even complain. He goes away because he missed the ball.”

Hlungwani was asked how different the incident in Pretoria was to the one from the Soweto Derby that involved Njabulo Blom and Relebohile Mofokeng which resulted in a penalty against Blom. The former whistle man insisted it’s all in the impact.

“Remember Blom was coming from behind when he made contact but when he turns in that’s where impact comes in so here there is not even a turn” added Hlungwani.

“There, there was turning so that turn has an impact on the ability of the player to play the ball. So that is the big difference. Here you can see he is having full control of the ball he takes a shot and unfortunately he missed.”
