Hlungwani Gives Verdict On Pirates Penalty Against City

Former FIFA Referee Victor Hlungwani reckons that Orlando Pirates attacker Patrick Maswanganyi should not have been awarded a penalty but instead a foul against him for impeding Cape Town City defender Tshegofatso Nyama.

According to “The Principal”, the Buccaneers’ man fouled Nyama by stepping on his feet and was not deserving of the spot kick which Maswanganyi missed after it hit the upright. The Citizens went on to win the tie 1-0 from Darwin Nunez’s second half strike.

Hlungwani was of the notion that ‘Tito’ was the one who committed the foul which should’ve been awarded against the Bucs player.

“We see a penalty given to Maswanganyi. Who committed a foul here between Maswanganyi and Nyama? Hlungwani said on SABC Sport’s Soccerzone.

“You will see that there’s shoulder-to-shoulder challenge or there’s collision between the two and we see a referee giving a penalty.

“But then who committed the foul? Let’s have a look at it, you’ll see that Maswanganyi is the one committing an offense.

“He’s the one jumping in, impeding. He’s even stepping on top of Nyama there.

“So, this was not supposed to be a penalty, but it was supposed to be a foul against Maswanganyi for stepping or impeding an opponent.”
