While his former academy were delighted to see Luke Fleurs join Kaizer Chiefs, they would’ve certainly preferred it not being a free transfer.
Fleurs joined Chiefs last month as a free agent after negotiating an exit from SuperSport United.
However Casey Prince, a director at Ubuntu Academy in Cape Town where Fleurs was developed, admits he would’ve preferred had Fleurs been purchased from the club, especially because they had a sell-on clause, which would’ve meant the academy would’ve received a small payout.
“Yeah, I mean, so I’m excited for him,” Prince told iDiski Times.
“I mean, I hope it’s a real period of redemption and growth and maturity that’s really happened.
“It’s not really the way I wanted him to go to Chiefs. I would have liked for it to be some 10-12 million Rand purchase (laughs).
“Partly because we had a sell-on, would have been nice to pay some bills. But also it just means something different when you’re bought, which he was also hoping a year ago would happen. So it’s kind of weird how it’s happened.”
