SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt is proud to have sold more players than any other coach in Mzansi something that has had an effect on the club though it’s a fact most people ignore.
Hunt is currently enduring one of his toughest seasons with a club he has won trophies with as they currently sit in 12th position on the Betway Premiership log with 17 points from as many outings.
They are however still in the running for the Nedbank Cup having reached the quarter-final stage where they have been drawn against defending champions Orlando Pirates.
Speaking to iDiski Times senior writer Matshelane Mamabolo in edition 191 of the newspaper Hunt highlighted the difficulties of selling players and having to start afresh.
“To say that ‘Gavin is washed up’… No, come on,” stated Hunt to iDiski Times.
“If you look at what he has done over the last 30 years, selling players and the sales of my players is more than any other coach in South Africa. Of course, I don’t make the money, but I am talking about if you take the sales through the clubs. Our teams which won the leagues, we sold them.
“You’ve got to look at it like that. You’re going to get caught with your pants down because the team is weak. The players who have come in are young, and you’ve got to give them time; the older ones that you have signed have not really worked out because they were the only ones that were available. So, don’t say to me ‘You’ve got players’ because that’s not the ones I wanted. I wanted someone else, but I could not get him because I did not have the money to buy him, you know.
“Can you believe I identified one or two players a year and a half ago? Now they are big names all over the media, but they did not come to me because I could not go to the club as they did not have the money. Now they go for big money to the big clubs, and everybody says ‘oh what signings’ but years ago I identified them.
“So, the bottom line is, what is coaching? It is all about the two Ps – Played and Points. People don’t see anything else. You’ve just lost your centre back, your team has just sold this player, as a coach, you must make a plan. It is a problem.”
