SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has revealed he phoned Benni McCarthy to ask about his opinion on former Cape Town City midfielder Zukile Kewuti.
Matsatsantsa announced the signing of Kewuti just hours before their 1-0 win over Cape Town City on Tuesday, confirming the 27-year-old dotted a six-months-deal.
Hunt mentioned that he called Manchester United first-team coach McCarthy, who worked with Kewuti during his time at City, to find out more about player and he didn’t hesitate to say he is a top player.
“Ow what a player, I love him too bits. He’s got what we need. What I like. 80% attitude, 20% ability.” Gavin Hunt joked with journalists.
“He’s got attitude, he’s got desire. He’s got the right mentality and most important thing for us he’s versatile. We need two, three players that can play two or three positions because I can’t sign two in every position. And he’s got that.
“He impressed me in no end, I spoke to Benni (McCarthy). Benni said ‘take him if you can’. He said ‘you will love him’. I said, ‘the first day I saw him I loved him’.
“And he is 27-years-old, where has he been? He was here (Cape Town City), wasn’t he? He didn’t play, he went to AmaZulu, he didn’t play. We will use him somewhere along the line that’s for sure.”
The former AmaZulu FC midfielder was on the bench when SuperSport United claimed their eighth win of campaign, beating City 1-0. Hunt’s side will now visit Lamontville Golden Arrows on Saturday at 15:30.
