Hunt Targets New No10, Stellies Keen On Swap Deal

Stellenbosch FC head coach Gavin Hunt continues to look for the number 10 position, as they aim to bring in Wonderboy Makhubu in a deal that will see Thato Khiba join Sekhukhune United.

Hunt has barely had time to unpack his bags in the Cape Winelands, but the veteran coach is already leaving his imprint at Stellenbosch FC.

Appointed to replace Steve Barker, Hunt arrived with a reputation forged over decades and four league titles, and early signs suggest that he has wasted little time in reshaping the squad.

While Wayde Jooste had already been secured before Hunt’s arrival, Mosa Lebusa, Tshegofatso Mabasa and Kobamelo Kodisang were all spotted in training with Stellies, as reported by this publication.

But it appears the recruitment drive may not be over just yet.

Stellenbosch, who surprisingly find themselves in 14th place, face a daunting assignment in their first match of the year, travelling to take on a Sekhukhune United side that has been flying high.

Yet the midweek trip could involve more than just 90 minutes of football. Behind the scenes, discussions are believed to be taking place that could see business concluded between the two clubs.

Sources suggest Stellies are exploring the possibility of a swap deal with Babina Noko, although the mechanics of the move are far from straightforward. The proposal on the table would see midfielder Thato Khiba move north to Sekhukhune, while Wonderboy Makhubu would head in the opposite direction to the Cape.

The complication lies in Makhubu’s current situation. The 29-year-old is presently on loan at Magesi, meaning Sekhukhune would first need to activate a recall clause before any deal could be finalised. That added layer makes negotiations more complex, but not impossible, should all parties find common ground.

Both Khiba and Makhubu have made 12 appearances in the league this season and have each found the net once. Yet stylistically, the move could suit both clubs, with Hunt potentially targeting Makhubu’s experience and versatility, while Sekhukhune look to add fresh energy in midfield.
