Orlando Pirates legend Happy Jele reckons that his former side remain the only team that can dethrone Mamelodi Sundowns for the Betway Premiership title this campaign.
Jele, 37, was part of the Buccaneers squad under Julio Leal that last won the club’s championship which was way back in the 2011/12 season. Despite their title drought, Pirates have been dominant in recent cup competitions winning five trophies in the space of two years.
“Magents”, speaking to iDiski Times writer Lethabo Kganyago in edition 183, tipped Pirates to the title for the 2024/25 season on condition that they stay consistent after their dream start to the new term as they recorded seven league wins on the trot before the latest setback going down 1-0 to Stellenbosch FC for their first loss of the campaign.
“I think obviously Pirates, they want to win the Betway Premiership. Obviously that’s their first priority I know for sure and with the current performance that they put in,” Jele told iDiski Times.
“The league I believe they can take it. I also say, I think it’s the only team that can compete with Sundowns. They’ve shown the way they have played. It is proven, it’s just about making sure they last in that marathon.
“Be consistent because being consistent is very difficult. But the way they’ve started in seven games, no loss, it’s a great start.
“If they can keep it that way they can take the trophy easily.”
