Johnson Discusses His Chiefs Future Ahead Of AFCON Break

Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson says he’s busy planning for the second half of the season when asked about his own future at the club.

Johnson was initially appointed as Head of Youth but became interim coach when Molefi Ntseki got sacked.

However, there is still an understanding from many that Johnson will eventually move back to his original role when Chiefs appoint a new coach.

The upcoming break for the Africa Cup of Nations would give the club the perfect chance to hit the reset button with a new coach in charge, but it sounds like Johnson and his technical team will be in charge of preparations for the second half of the campaign.

“I think this mini-break will probably be the hardest that I’m going to work now, because you can’t end 2023 on a high like this and start 2024 in a different mode,” he said when asked about his own future.

“If I’m in the lead of this particular team, then it’s going to be the hardest that I’ve… I can see it’s going to be the hardest work I’ve ever put in.

“Having planned already what we’re going to do, it’s not Cavin Johnson planning this whole thing, it’s Cavin Johnson and company. Which means the medical people, the nutritional people, the physical people, the technical people, we’re gonna do that all together.

“It will be for sure a different Kaizer Chiefs that comes out and plays next year.”

Chiefs have won four of the seven games under Johnson and end the year in sixth place on the DStv Premiership log.
