Kaizer Chiefs caretaker coach Cavin Johnson has explained that the red card for Brandon Petersen has given Itumeleng Khune a chance to return to the bench but also emphasised that Bruce Bvuma remains the club’s number one.
Khune returned to the Chiefs match day squad for the first time since November when they lost 1-0 to Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby.
The 36-year-old is in the last few months of his contract and also came back from a club suspension after allegedly arriving under the influence of alcohol to training.
The experienced goalkeeper has been with Amakhosi for two decades and made his debut in 2007/08 season after the departure of Rowen Fernandez. Since then he never looked back as he went on to win 12 trophies, including three league titles.
Johnson explained that Khune’s return is based on Petersen being suspended, but he reiterated that Bvuma remains the first choice of the club.
“In the dressing room, he has always been positive. Itu has always given us positives in the dressing room,” Johnson told the media.
“And the fact that he has been here for two decades is even more important and he knows that he has to contribute.
“He is back on the bench now because Brandon got a red, so it was touch and go for him whether he was going to make it [back on the bench].
“The gods of football gives him an opportunity to come on the bench in the last two games while Brandon is out but they have to fight again to see who is the second.
“At the moment Bruce is the number one.”
