Johnson Talks About Bvuma Selection & Clean Sheet

Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson has urged Bruce Bvuma to work hard to retain his place in the team after keeping a clean sheet in his first start in over a year.

It’s been about 15 months since Bvuma started a game for Amakhosi and he took his chance in the Soweto derby as they beat Moroka Swallows 1-0 at Dobsonville Stadium.

In the sweltering heat and Brandon Petersen making do with a place on the bench, the 28-year-old showed a commanding performance as he organised a new-look centre-back pairing of Given Msimango and Edmilson Dove.

“Eight games, wow, look it’s not about Bruce, it’s about the team in front of him – and yes we come away with no goals conceded but I think the whole team has to be congratulated,” Johnson said when asked about Bvuma keeping their first clean sheet in eight games.

“Yes he got a chance, he has to make sure he keeps it, [make sure] his head doesn’t go to his body and he’s able to maintain because I can say the same thing about Happy Mashiane.

“I can say the same thing about Pony [Nkosingiphile Ngcobo], I can say the same thing about Bibo [Sabelo Radebe], they are young players.

“I can say the same thing about Shabba [Mduduzi Shabalala], on the bench, in the pitch, doesn’t matter if you are part of the 20 and it’s a credit to all of them.”

Since being prompted to the senior team in 2017, Bvuma has made 37 appearances for Chiefs, conceding 44 goals and keeping 11 clean sheets.
