Kekana Makes Bold Title Claim Chances For Chiefs

Mamelodi Sundowns legend Hlompho Kekana is of the notion that Kaizer Chiefs are in the Betway Premiership title talk because of their log position.

Amakhosi however saw their charge at chasing the leading pack suffer a minor dent on Tuesday evening after their shock 2-1 defeat at the hands of Stellenbosch FC at FNB Stadium.

The Glamour Boys went into the break leading 1-0 courtesy of Flavio Da Silva’s opener.

Stellies turned up the screws in the second stanza leveling matters through Langelihle Phili before Devin Titus sealed the winner five minutes from time.

Chiefs thus succumbed to their second defeat of the season in 16 outings and remain in fourth spot with 30 points.

Kekana believes Chiefs stand a good chance of challenging for the league title if they can get into third place.

“They stand a big chance [challenging for the league title] because if you look at the Kaizer Chiefs team, they are in position four,” he said on SABC Sport.

“They’ve got 30 points which is positive when you look at their previous season where they finished on the log.

“But when you look at the teams that are above them which is Mamelodi Sundowns and Sekhukhune United, Sekhukhune United lead Kaizer Chiefs with two points which tells you if they win on Tuesday, they stand a big chance of overtaking them and put themself into position three. That is doable.

“They still have [14 matches] games to go, so there’s a lot of positives when you look at the Kaizer Chiefs team.”

Chiefs next face fierce nemesis Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby on Saturday, 28 February, at the Calabash.
