Khanye Assesses City & SSU Struggles

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye has discussed what he believes are the struggles at Cape Town City and SuperSport United this season.

Despite finishing in the top 8 last campaign, the sides have had indifferent starts to the current season, with the Citizens lying in 10th position on the Betway Premiership log with 11 points and SuperSport in fifth with 15 points from the same number of games.

Khanye believes City’s biggest challenge is that the side hasn’t really replaced the players they lost in key positions. However, he has faith in Eric Tinkler to turn things around once the challenge has been addressed with the addition of a new goalkeeper.

“Number one I trust Eric Tinkler,” Khanye told iDiski Times.

“He is one of the best coaches, I love him. He has lost so many top-class players and there were no replacements. Recently, he lost the midfielder, number five [Brice] Ambina, a top-class player who’s underrated and I don’t know why Chiefs didn’t sign him.

“He has lost [Khanyisa] Mayo, and lost [Terrence] Mashego and [Thato] Mokeke. He has never really replaced those players and in vital positions.

“I also don’t think he has a goalkeeper. I’m surprised he hasn’t signed a goalkeeper. I have respect for Darren Keet, he was a good goalkeeper, but he is killing the team now and he has aged.

“He is now playing with young players and there’re expectations on them. I also think they are a selling team. Their story is disappointing but I believe Tinkler will turn things around in the New Year and they just need to sign players to replace those that have left, players that can be ahead of those that have left.”

As far as Matsatsantsa, Khanye expressed his disappointment in coach Gavin Hunt, saying he hasn’t been able to make the team tick.

“I’m very disappointed with coach Gavin, SuperSport is a big brand and they’ve got facilities,” added Khanye.

“There are expectations on Gavin Hunt, so SuperSport is out of the picture they must change a coach I need to be honest.

“I mean which player can you choose at SuperSport to go to the national team? Ricardo Goss is unfortunate, I wish Chiefs would sign that goalkeeper, he’s one of the best but he’s playing for a wrong team.

“There is no build-up and stuff. The type of players that the coach has signed, I feel for Vincent Pule, they are not going to accommodate the way he’s playing.”
