Former Pretoria Callies head coach Kwanele Kopo has opened up on his collapsed Chippa United move.
Kopo was heavily linked with a move to the Chilli Boys before the start of 2023/24 season.
This publication reported at the time that Kopo turned down his move because of a one-month settlement that was offered by Chilli Boys, if things don’t accordingly, which was said to be the deal breaker in negotiations.
Kopo was on the Championship Show with Lerato Phago, James Mayinga and Fabian McCarthy, and he opened up on the collapsed move, saying that everything was agreed on but when he was supposed to sign, the pen ran out of ink.
“I actually had an approach from Chippa, from Morgan to be specific in 2021 when I was in the Olympic team as assistant coach,” he said on SuperSport.
“On the week we were going to the Olympics I received a contract from Chippa that I only needed to sign, but I couldn’t because I wanted to have a proper goodbye to Superport United whom I’ve been for 20-years.
“And this time there was an approach yes, from coach Morgan Mammila and we had discussions and yes, despite the fact that I had a project with Callies but as home, as someone that would like to give something back to the Eastern Cape, we had discussions, but I think right at the end when I was supposed to be put the signature, because we had more or less agreed on 80% of the deal but when I was supposed to put pen on paper, the pen ran out of ink.
“And I decided to continue with project at Callies but without burning bridges with Chippa maybe in the future we don’t know but it was on and then two or three other teams that I had talks with.
“One in the DStv Premiership and two in the Motsepe Foundation. Actually, I turned down a very good deal in the Motsepe Foundation because of the loyalty and the commitment I had given to the chairman of Callies.”
