Match-Winning Cupido Delights Barker

Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker praised match-winner Ashley Cupido’s good form after he helped his team beat Magesi 2-1 on Tuesday night.

It looked like Cupido had scored a brace, but the first, as he got to the end of a Fawaaz Basadien cross, was adjudged as an own goal by Mzwandile Buthelezi. After Magesi equalised, Cupido did officially get his name on the scoresheet with a well-taken individual goal.

Just seven days earlier, the 23-year-old did score a brace, helping Stellies to a 3-2 win over TS Galaxy and his goal tally for the Betway Premiership season is now four.

Speaking after the game to a small group of journalists, Barker told us he was pleased for Cupido, who joined from Cape Town Spurs at the start of the campaign, and with Bradley Mojela out injured for the season, his form could be just what the club needs.

“Ja, also nice for Ashley to get on the score sheet again,” Barker said.

“I thought he had the two, but it seems like one was an own goal, but still, his presence forced the error.

“Nice for him to be getting on the score sheet, considering Bradley’s out for the season and Ashley, not easy in the beginning, but he is a goal scorer, and it was just a matter of time and just continue, just believing and giving him the confidence.

“So hopefully with this sort of run that he’s having, if he can maintain that for us till the end of the season, it would be really good.”
