Mayo Explains Father’s Role Ahead Of Soweto Derby

Kaizer Chiefs striker Khanyisa Mayo has opened up on how his legendary father Patrick Mayo has been advising him ahead of the Soweto derby.

It doesn’t often happen to see a father and son playing in the Soweto derby, but this season, we might see that happening.

Mayo Snr, a Chiefs legend, played this game in the past, and now we could be on the verge of seeing his son Khanyisa wearing the Amakhosi black and gold in the derby.

In most cases, Khanyisa is seen as privileged when it comes to this game, as he gets first-hand advice regarding this game, and his father is expected to go the extra mile to prepare him.

The senior Mayo has done exactly that, according to his son, who stated that he prepared him for almost a week for South Africa’s biggest football spectacle.

“We are on calls every day to calm my nerves and show me the importance of the derby is to collect maximum points,” Mayo told the media.

“He has played this game and won it, so he is there to show me what is needed in front of goals. As a former striker and defender, he knows where coaching is needed.

“Also, the psychological aspect is something he knows how to handle because he has been there before. For me, it’s about reflecting on my past games against big clubs and preparing myself mentally for when I get the chance.

“Coming on as a sub in a game of this magnitude, where you have to catch up with the tempo, is all about preparing yourself and being ready when called upon to shine in front of goals.”
