Cape Town Spurs coach Ernst Middendorp says Cape Town City has no chance of getting something from Mamelodi Sundowns, reiterating his point that the powerful Tshwane giants will win the league by the distance.
In fact, Middendorp said whoever you are in the PSL, you stand no chance against Sundowns.
This entirely brings about the pain to Middendorp to see Sundowns galloping with the DStv Premiership race yet again as they have unprecedentedly won all the opening 11 matches, sitting pretty at the top of the table with 33 points.
Sundowns will look to stretch their lead at the top of the table when they visit Cape Town City at DHL Stadium (Sunday, 15:30).
Eric Tinkler’s side will hope to be the first team to halt Sundowns’ winning train that has no match in the PSL currently, that even when they are not at their best, they do find a way, a mark of the champion.
In some matches where they have won, such as that against AmaZulu, who put up a good fight this month, they did find their way to get over the line.
But with Tinkler’s side coming up, Middendorp doesn’t think City will stand a good chance to get something from Rulani Mokwena’s men who have made the PSL of a mockery as others appear to be gooseberries in the DStv Premiership table.
“Who plays against Sundowns (and wins)? You play against Sundowns; you can be Moroka Swallows, you can be Cape Town City and they will see on Sunday, you can be Cape Town Spurs, you will lose,” said Middendorp in one of his fiery press conferences in Durban.
“That’s the reality. They will be champions at the end of February.”
Middendorp, who knows the pain of having the league snatched in his hands in the last game of the season by Sundowns when he oversaw Kaizer Chiefs in the 2019/20 season, has suffered a prey from Sundowns this season, who beat his Spurs 3-0 at Loftus Stadium on 13 December.
City, who sit in fourth place on 25 points through 14 matches, got a draw against Sundowns the last time these teams met, offering a glimmer of hope.
But Sundowns have got the better of City of late, unbeaten in their last six PSL matches (W3 D3 L0). Cape Town City are looking for their first league win in games between the two sides since August 2020, with Sundowns having outscored Tinkler’s boys by 7-0 during their unbeaten streak. But hosts City have been formidable at home this season with four wins and just one loss in five PSL contests.
