Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi says he’s honoured to lead the team after Rulani Mokwena’s exit, but clarified it’s currently on “interim” role.
Masandawana are yet to give an update on the head coach position after opting to part ways with Mokwena just before their pre-season for 2024/25 kicked off.
While Mokwena has since joined Wydad Athletic Club as head coach, Mngqithi is leading the team in pre-season, with Steve Komphela also being roped back in as senior coach.

Mngqithi, whose contract extension at the club is yet to be announced, has now for the first time addressed his role at Chloorkop, confirming he’s serving in an interim basis.
“Firstly, it’s an honor for one to be given an opportunity to lead the team, though it’s still in the interim,” he told SuperSport TV.
“And see to it that the pre-season goes smooth. And from the beginning of pre-season up until now, I think everything has gone quite well.”
Mngqithi also confirmed that Sipho Mbule and Ronwen Williams are currently the only absentees due to injuries.
“Fortunately, we did not even get any injuries in the process,” he added.
“Probably in the whole pre-season, one major injury that we had was Sipho Mbule. And Ronwen came for pre-season already injured.
“But otherwise, everything has gone very well.”
Sundowns start their 2024/25 campaign with an MTN8 quarter-final tie against Polokwane City on Sunday, 11 August, 15:00 at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
