Lamontville Golden Arrows head coach Manqoba Mngqithi believes that striker Sede Junior Dion can win the Betway Premiership Golden Boot.
The Betway Premiership’s leading goal scorer Sede Junior Dion left the pitch injured in Arrows’ 1-0 win over Durban City in the 71st minute and was replaced by Oumar Camara.
Dion is currently sitting on 12 goals, followed by Mamelodi Sundowns striker Iqraam Rayners on 11 goals and Relebohile Mofokeng with nine strikes.
The 32-year-old hasn’t scored since his brace against Marumo Gallants on 14th March and is now four games without finding the net.
Mngqithi gave an injury update, stating that it’s nothing major that they should be worried about. The former Sundowns head coach also believes that Dion can score more goals to win the Golden Boot, but he is competing with top strikers who are capable of scoring goals on any given day.
“I don’t think Junior’s injury was serious. I think he ran a lot against Pirates and was already feeling the strain,” Mngqithi said to the media.
“I believe he’s got what it takes to win the top goalscorer award, but he has competition. He competes with very level strikers; in my opinion, his biggest competition is Iqraam Rayners and Bryan Leon at Sundowns. Although he may have fewer goals, he has scored far too many goals in a short space of time.
“You might say maybe in one match, one day, he’ll score four goals and this thing will be settled. But I believe that in the forthcoming games, with a bit less pressure on the team, we might be able to get more goals from him.
“I’m still predicting at least four to five goals from him. I think he can do that if he can get a brace somewhere. And I hope he achieves that, because it will be good for the club.”
