Golden Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi has made an honest admission about the possibility of the club losing some of its key players at the end of the season.

Abafana Bes’thende have been among the most entertaining teams in the league this season, despite sitting in 12th place on the table. One of the main reasons they have struggled to climb higher is their defensive record, having conceded 24 goals so far.

However, Arrows have made up for that with their attacking play and are currently the third-highest scoring team in the league with 24 goals, behind Mamelodi Sundowns [34] and Orlando Pirates [33].

Their impressive performances have attracted interest in several players. Siyanda Ndlovu is reportedly on the radar of both Sundowns and Pirates, while Ayabulela Maxwele, Ayanda Jiyane, Issac Cisse and Junior Dion are also believed to be monitored by some of the league’s bigger clubs.

Mngqithi admitted the club is not overly concerned about the possibility of losing players, saying Arrows would be open to selling if suitable offers are made so the club can maintain financial balance.

He also pointed out that the squad has a number of promising young players who could step up if departures happen, with some already having been given opportunities this season.

“If I am honest with you, I don’t have that fear because we also have to balance our books,” said Mngqithi.

“If people are coming with good offers for our players…I think I signed a whole lot of youngsters to try and make sure that we have got a team behind this team. Already players like [Nhlanhla] Gasa, we have given opportunities and they have shown that they can take over.

“[Sabelo] Sithole came in today [last week against Sundowns] again. He is another player that can take over from the players that might be wanted. I would be happier if we could get good money for these players so that we can reinvest and improve the squad because the reality is we should not run away from the fact that our teams do not have the same budget as the rest of the teams.

“We should be willing to sell but we should not be foolish in doing that. We should sell at a good price to whoever can afford what we want so that we can balance the books. We have not even spoken about selling players at this stage.

“We are still focussing on making sure that these boys give the team at least a top eight spot this season.”
