Mngqithi Weighs in on Dion’s Golden Boot Chances

Golden Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi has weighed in on chances of Junior Dion, scooping the top goal scorer award this season.

The Ivorian striker is leading the charts with 12 goals after just 18 Betway Premiership matches he has played this season. He also scored one goal in three Nedbank Cup matches he featured in.

Dion has been in impressive form under the guidance of Mngqithi, having joined the club at the beginning of the campaign from AmaZulu.

Mngqithi says he prays that the former Marumo Gallants forward doesn’t get injured or suspended so his momentum cannot be disrupted.

He said he considers Iqraam Rayners and Brayan Leon of Mamelodi Sundowns as serious contenders for the award.

“It would be nice, not necessarily to maintain the position of Dion in terms of goals but also to keep improving on our offensive actions,” said Mngqithi.

“It’s pleasing to note that Ndlovu is probably number one in terms of assists in the PSL, PK [Philani Khumalo] is also there with five assists as well.

“For Dion, to be the top-goal scorer, then we’re looking at how many assists we can get from all our players around because if PK can have five from the number of games he’s played, it’s very positive for the club.

“But the reality is that I don’t want us to get carried away with that Dion is leading now. We can also wish that he maintains but the competition is very stiff.

“In my opinion, he’s competing with Iqraam [Rayners] and Brayan Leon at Sundowns. Those two, I think are posing a serious challenge.

“And you know those teams are the ones that create probably a lot of chances. I can only pray that he stays in the game, doesn’t get injured or suspensions. We are happy that he’s currently leading.”
