Mokwena Admits ‘Middendorp Dream’

While Rulani Mokwena is flying high at Mamelodi Sundowns, he has confessed that one of his dreams remains to be the assistant of Ernst Middendorp.

Mokwena was speaking during the post-match press conference after Sundowns’ 1-1 draw with SuperSport United, and when asked about the referees, Mokwena first quoted Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro in response, before moving onto Middendorp.

Middendorp recently said that there are no colleagues in South Africa’s coaching fraternity, but Mokwena said he actually speaks to Cape Town Spurs’ coach regularly, and he hopes that German considers him a colleague.

“Actually, I liked what Jose Riviero said in one of the interviews, actually, he said, ‘the referees are not going to be in my next training session’,” Mokwena started his reply, as per Masandawana Fan Vlog.

“I actually liked that answer. And I think that should be maybe the option because in answering your question, and in, in a very polite way, I don’t know if you get me because I don’t think we are in an environment that is very conducive to that type of discussion.

“You know, an honest frank discussion about that, but I don’t think we, and to be honest, and really, really like Josie Riveiro said at Pirates – when you can’t control it, so why focus on it?

“I listen to a lot of things, you know, I listen. Still one of my dreams is to is Ernst Middendorp’s assistant. Really, it’s one of my dreams, because I phone him a lot. He knows I phone him.

“I just talked to him, because I like him. I like how thinks, I like how he sees things and since he’s come back from, he had that stint in Thailand, his way of seeing things is just amazing. And it’s still one of my dreams, I must tell you to be his assistant coach.

“Honestly, and he said something the other day, he doesn’t think we have colleagues in South Africa. I would hope he considers me a colleague because I really, really do admire him a lot. So much.”
