Mokwena – Maybe Steve’s Motivation To Beats Us Should’ve Been Higher

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has questioned whether Steve Komphela and Golden Arrows did enough to try and beat his side after they were reduced to 10 men.

Sundowns played for nearly a half with 10 vs 11 after Mosa Lebusa got sent off right after break but still held onto a goalless draw and looked the more likelier side to win.

Despite the numerical advantage, Sundowns still had the lion share of possession (79%) and 12 to just two shots in the second half.

“Well, I think maybe his motivation to beat us should’ve been higher, especially when there is a numerical advantage,” Mokwena told journalists in KZN when it was put to him whether he doesn’t want to lose to his former senior coach Komphela.

“But I can’t speak for Steve, I can’t. We try to win the game, we did everything to win the game and I’m very proud of the players and their efforts.

“And maybe that’s a question for him.”

Mokwena also insisted that he wasn’t out for personal gratification over Komphela and insisted he’s just focussed on getting the best out of his team.

“I don’t play in that space,” he added.

“I try to be a coach that respects the game and tries to focus on helping the team.

“That’s why, even when there was a situation in the last game, I had to go against my heart and pull Divine [Lunga] out in the first half to do what’s best for the team.

“Even today, when we get a red card, it hurts to take out Themba Zwane early because he was playing well, but I have to do what’s best for the team.

“My focus all the time is not on the other things on the side, my focus is on being as professional as possibly can to help the team.”
