Kaizer Chiefs head coach Molefi Ntseki departed the pitch at Mbombela Stadium with fans hurling objects at him after the 1-0 defeat to TS Galaxy.
The defeat leaves them winless in his first three league games after a 2-1 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns and the 0-0 season opener against Chippa United.
Despite the impressive late win over Cape Town City in the MTN8 quarter-finals which set up a semi-final with Sundowns, the fans were not left pleased by the start of the season, throwing objects at the coach as he walked into the tunnel, with police rushing out to shield him.
“Very disappointed with the loss, but I can attribute it to a few things, we didn’t look as sharp as we were supposed to be, we were almost second in everything,” Ntseki told SuperSport TV after the game before the incident transpired.
“Whether in attack not having numbers in the box, after losing possession not aggressive to apply counter-pressing, so I think on the physical side of it, we were not very sharp but I think we can always improve on that.
When reflecting on the indifferent start to his debut season as head coach, having been redeployed from his role as Head of Technical and Development, he cited something all too familiar to Chiefs fans under his predecessor Arthur Zwane last season.
“I think it’s been an up and down [start to the season], it’s been hot and cold if you look at the first game we played, and then we played the second game of the league, we were not as sharp,” he said.
“Then [against City] we were spot on in terms of our plan and execution – I think today if you look at how we started… shaky, we weren’t on the ball as we’d love to but after 15 minutes we had more possession, keeping the ball and making combinations.
“It’s just unfortunate, the few chances we got, mainly in the first half, we couldn’t bury those chances.”
Ntseki concluded by saying the mood in the camp is good after improving their squad in for the 2023/24 season and the players are still looking forward to having a good season but they are still working on improving from the tactical aspects.
