Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou says it is a good thing for South African football to have more than one side compete for league honours.
The coach’s comments come on the back of Pirates’ 2-0 victory over AmaZulu in the Betway Premiership, a result that saw his side move top of the summit with 35 points, three ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns.
Sundowns have dominated the domestic scene for seasons and currently on a successive eight league title run and Ouaddou said having more than one team fight for the title will also add value to the local game.
“I think it’s good for South African football to have maybe three, four teams in the race for the title,” said Ouaddou.
“It brings value for South African football. You cannot have a team who is dominating for decades with 20 points. Even the interest of football you lose the interest.
“I think it’s a good year now that we have maybe three or four teams going to fight for the title.”
Ouaddou is also aware that staying on top will not be easy with the quality in the league, however emphasises that unity will help his side maintain that.
“I think it’s just a top moment for us,” added the coach.
“We are excited. Excited to keep working hard, excited to keep living well together, to have a fantastic team spirit, the unity, the solidarity will help us to keep that position. Even I can tell you tonight that it will not be easy because we have good teams.
“It’s the first time I have played AmaZulu, it’s one of the best teams in terms of organisation, in terms of the quality of the players, the quality of the coach as well. AmaZulu and a lot of teams in this PSL will try to get this position.
“For us is not to be stressful, not to have pressure at all. It’s just to play our football and just to keep that organisation, that unity, that spirit and we play game after game and we’ll see what happens at the end of the season.”
