Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has poured cold water over suggestions that the team seems to perform better in Nasreddine Nabi’s absence as the club enters a difficult period.
News broke last week after Chiefs’ 3-1 loss to Sekhukhune United in the league about the club and Nabi parting ways on mutual grounds while others suggested it was because his coaching licence had expired. Nabi who helped the team break a 10-year trophy drought didn’t travel to Angola for the CAF Confederation Cup match with Kabuscorp SCP with the club saying in a statement that they were in talks with the coach to try and resolve matters.
Petersen spoke to the media at the launch of this season’s Carling Knockout Cup, and he said they are focused on doing their job which is to play and make supporters happy.
“I think at the end of the day it’s just football you know, coaches come, coaches go at the end of the day,” said Petersen.
“I think for us, the main thing is to stay focused we have obviously back-to-back games, and I think for us it’s important to try and keep the team, make sure we stay in it.
“Obviously, we have a job and at the end of the day, our job is to play football and make the supporters happy. So, I think that’s the main focus for now and looking forward to the next fixture going out and doing our best.”
The 31-year-old further poured cold water on suggestions players have more fun when Nabi is not present.
“I think we’ve always been the same whether Coach Nabi was there of if he wasn’t there,” added the keeper.
“I think, like you said it’s a conspiracy. I think for us it’s important to always respect whoever’s in charge because that’s our job. Our job is to play football, listen to the coaches and do what we are instructed to do.
“At the end of the day, I think, like I said, this is football – coaches come, and they go. For us is to stay focused at our job in hand and our job is to play football and that’s the main focus for us.”
