Pirates Heading To Europe For Pre-Season

Orlando Pirates will head to Spain for a pre-season camp in July, iDiski Times has learnt.

The Buccaneers are currently on a break after securing a domestic cup double in Jose Riveiro’s debut campaign at the club.

After lifting the MTN8 trophy in November, they added the Nedbank Cup last month, beating Sekhukhune United 2-1 in a hard-fought final.

Overall, Pirates played 39 games in the 2022/23 campaign, winning 24 and losing eight – all of them in the league, where they ended up in second place to qualify for the 2023/24 CAF Champions League.

Continental football and the newly-formed Carling Knockout Cup will add even more games to an already-packed schedule, which has seemingly motivated the club to head to Spain for their preparations of what seems to be an upcoming gruelling campaign.

According to sources, the club has asked its players to get visas for a pre-season camp in Spain between 9 and 20 July, with coach Riveiro likely playing a big part in the decision to head to Europe.

The 47-year-old was born in Vigo and worked as youth coach at Celta Vigo between 2011 and 2014 before moving to Finland. Assistant coach Sergio Almenara and Fitness Trainer Michel Bellver Esteve are also from Spain.
