Pitso Mosimane has explained he feels he cannot comment on his former assistant Cavin Johnson becoming coach of Kaizer Chiefs because he just holds the position in an interim role.
Johnson was named Chiefs interim coach after Molefi Ntseki was sacked, just a few weeks following his own appointment as Head of Youth at Amakhosi.
He has since won two games and lost two, celebrating a 1-0 win in the Soweto Derby at Moroka Swallows on Sunday.
Before joining Chiefs, Johnson also worked as Mosimane’s assistant at Al Ahly between October 2020 and September 2021, with Mosimane now asked whether he thinks Johnson came at the right time to Naturena and what are his hidden qualities.
“I think it’s an unfair question or comment about Coach Cavin Johnson because Coach Cavin Johnson is the Head of Youth at Kaizer Chiefs,” he told the South African Football Journalists Association (SAFJA) on Monday.
“He’s just filling in there and we all know he is filling in and I think he said it also himself. So we can’t talk about his role as a senior coach, when he is the Head of Youth, because, probably, that’s what he wants.
“So I’m not sure. I can’t answer on his behalf. I think you need to ask him after his work with me and got all there, does he think what he has learned with us playing Bayern, playing Palmeiras and all those teams, is it good enough to make him succeed?
“Okay, all I know is that the coaches I worked with at Sundowns are smart, they’ve learned, and they’ve kept the principles. Of course, they’ve added a little bit of spice, which is good, and I like to see the spice, it’s beautiful.
“You know it’s a Mercedes Benz with facelifts and all those things. Beautiful, why not? But it’s still a Mercedes Benz, remember.”
