Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has praised Mbekezeli Mbokazi after the youngster’s first team debut saying the player did well.
The 19-year-old defender started the league game against Chippa United in Gqeberha on Wednesday evening, lasting the whole 90 minutes and helped Pirates get a clean sheet in the 1-0 victory.
Mbokazi, who has been praised for his technical abilities and leadership qualities in the DDC league, also had an attempt at goal against the Chilli boys.
Riveiro went on to include Siyabonga Ndlozi, saying the youngsters stepping up speak to the depth in the squad.
“I think they did a good job,” said Riveiro on SuperSport TV.
“Like I said many times we have a lot of talent in the squad. When you see players on the bench or on the field is because they are ready.
“Young boys, 22, 19 years old playing the first time in PSL in an important game for the team, for the club under pressure.
“I think what they delivered tonight on the field is something to give a lot of value and to be happy as a club.”
The win saw Pirates close their gap to leaders Mamelodi Sundowns from 18 to 16 points, while they still have four games in hand.
