Riveiro On Sundowns – Sooner Or Later It Will Change

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro says the dominance of Mamelodi Sundowns in the DStv Premiership won’t last forever.

Sundowns have started the 2023/24 season in record fashion with ten consecutive wins, leaving them on 30 points, 11 points ahead of sixth-placed Pirates, with two games in hand over the Soweto giants who were touted as their title contender.

Ahead of facing TS Galaxy this weekend, the Spaniard was asked if he felt the pressure of the gap, with Sundowns seemingly pulling away to yet another title, which would represent their sixth consecutive league crown – to which he denied it’s weighing on him or his squad.

“It’s difficult but we’re not thinking about it, it can be someone else leading the log, we want to be at the top in every competition, it’s our aim and objective,” he said.

“It’s what we are working towards no matter who is leading [the table] or dominating – I would feel the pressure if I didn’t know what I was doing, in whatever I’m doing in my life – if I know what I’m doing I won’t feel pressure.

“This is what we try as a team, not just me as a coach, I’m talking about the group, we know what we are doing, we know what we’re trying to do and achieve, so there’s no pressure.

“Sometimes we feel pressure in games, yes, but not in our daily [habits], I don’t wake up in the morning and think ‘Oh Jesus, what pressure’, it’s not like that, it’s a different story. We’re trying to be our best version every day.

“We managed to do it in some periods in our time here together, now there were moments in this season where we lost points, it’s a fact when you talk of results, but the level of our performances were most times, maybe two exceptions where we weren’t at a good level.

“Then results are never in control, it’s something you can see in our games, and see in other games, it’s not in control – but there’s nothing we can do about it, if you talk about [Sundowns], 30 points in 10 games, that is something exceptional.

“It’s something that is not only our responsibility to stop because we face them two times per season in the league, and the league is 30 games. So if you finish the season competing against an opponent that wins every game, there’s nothing you can do more than congratulate them and try again next time. But sooner than later it will change.”

The Buccaneers will be aiming to move into the top four when they face Galaxy on Saturday at Orlando Stadium (20h00).
