Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has admitted that the lessons learnt by his side this past season hurt, especially because of how close they came to lifting trophies.
Masandawana played 50 matches in the past campaign but only had the Betway Premiership title to show for after being eliminated in the MTN8, Nedbank Cup tournament at the semi-finals stage, lost the Carling Knockout Cup final to newcomers Magesi FC, and were pipped to the CAF Champions League crown by Pyramids FC and did not get out of the group at the on-going FIFA Club World Cup in the USA.
Williams says it’s time for him and his teammates to take a deserved break because the near misses have been tough mentally on them and they need renewed energy to go at it again next season.
“I mean it’s time to clear our minds,” said Williams.
“It’s been a long draining season for all of us. Competed, I think, in five or six competitions, travelled all over the world, played so many games, that’s tough.
“You know, mentally, it’s not easy especially when there are setbacks when you don’t win, or when you don’t lift a cup, and then you know, it hurts even more. And then you feel the aches, you feel the pains, you feel the injuries and then you know, it just feels like things are just worthless.
“But this is now the time, the perfect time for us to get away from each other, miss each other a bit, and just come back stronger in the next I think three weeks because in a month’s time, the Betway Premiership is starting.
“The MTN8 is starting and knowing Mamelodi Sundowns we want to go and win everything again.”
