Rulani Responds To Middendorp Claim

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has insisted the title race is not over after Swallows coach Ernst Middendorp had claimed the league is wrapped up already.

Masandawana won their eighth successive league match on Tuesday evening, beating a resilient Swallows side 2-0.

After the match, Middendorp suggested the win, which saw Downs go seven points clear of second-placed SuperSport United, wrapped up the league title in Downs’ favour.

However, Mokwena tried to put a break on the title talk, insisting no title was won in January, but also insisted wins like the one over Swallows win you championships.

“I’ve got big respect for coach Ernst and his opinions but it’s too early to say that the league is wrapped up because no league title has ever been won in January and so many games to go,” he told reporters.

“Congratulations to the players, congratulations to the technical team, to the entire club and the Mamelodi Sundowns supporters.

“An important win against a difficult team. We expected and we spoke about it, even here in the presser and it proved to be very, very difficult.

“But this is the games that win you championships.”

Downs return to action on Friday when they will host third-placed Richards Bay.
