Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze has explained the return of Dillon Sheppard to the club’s senior team after spending the past seasons working in the reserve side.
Sheppard was part of the Amakhosi first-team technical staff between the 2020/21 and 2024/25 seasons, serving as assistant coach under five different mentors — Stuart Baxter, Gavin Hunt, Arthur Zwane, Molefi Ntseki and Cavin Johnson.
He was later moved to the reserve side to assist Vela Khumalo, where the pair enjoyed success last season by guiding the club to their first-ever DStv Diski Challenge title.
With the senior team struggling in recent matches, Kaze said Sheppard has been brought back to strengthen the technical team.
Responding to concerns about the team’s struggles in front of goal, Kaze noted that the coaching staff has the capacity to address the issue and that Sheppard’s return adds another experienced voice to help find solutions.
“I believe that the staff has enough skill to deal with that, it’s [finishing] the things that we have worked on,” said Kaze.
“We have brought an extra member in the technical staff with the experience.
“I would say that at training we do a lot of exercise to finish a lot of situations that could arise into the game.
“I’m pretty sure that when we get a little bit confident, we’re going to be better in that phase.”
