Sundowns Offer For SA Talent In Europe Rejected

Mamelodi Sundowns have held talks with Austrian side SV Ried for a possible transfer of Antonio Van Wyk in a swap deal which would see Siyabonga Mabena head in the opposite direction, plus cash.

According to sources, Sundowns tabled an offer for Van Wyk after their long interest in the former Stellenbosch FC player which was reportedly turned down by Ried who instead made a counter offer by asking for a swap deal for Mabena plus cash, which Downs also turned down.

If this deal was to happen, Mabena would then be set to join Ried with cash on top while Van Wyk moves to Chloorkop, but Mabena is seen as the future at the Brazilians while the Betway Premiership champions would have faced stiff competition from other top Austrian top sides interested in Van Wyk’s signature.

The 23-year-old joined Ried in Austria in September 2024 from Stellenbosch and played a key role in Ried gaining promotion to the Austria Bundesliga, and has taken his game to a new level in the top flight.

Since his arrival, he has made 36 appearances, scored two goals and contributed with seven assists.

Mabena on the other hand hasn’t played much this season in the senior team but represented South Africa’s U20 in the recent FIFA World Cup.
