Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Teko Modise was not impressed with the actions of three Kaizer Chiefs players when analysing the first goal in their 2-0 loss to Polokwane City.
The experienced midfielder has seen it all in South African football, having played for the likes of SuperSport United, Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City, while winning several trophies, including the league title.
Modise broke down Chiefs’ defending for the second Polokwane goal, and identified what led to them conceding the first goal which was scored by Oswin Appollis.
“If you have a straight line in that midfield you are in danger because one pass eliminated four players then what it does, it transfers danger to the defense,” Modise said to SuperSport TV.
“You saw when Matuludi made that run playing one-two with Appollis, who was tracking Matuludi was Cross. When the ball was scored Cross is now assuming the left-back position he never tucked in which means when the ball went wide he never tucked in, he went to his position.
“No, you have these bad habits because one mistake results to another mistake. You can still say [Inacio] Miguel didn’t mark inside the box but in most cases, if the cross is bad he is able to anticipate but the bad habit started there with that line.
“You have [Yusuf] Maart, you have [Sibongiseni] Mthethwa that are playing as a two six now, ask yourself when the ball switches to the left side how does a team shift, you can’t shift in a straight line because when the winger goes in the left-sided midfielder comes slightly behind the second midfielder, which is Maart comes slightly behind Mthethwa, you can’t be in a straight line.”
