Tinkler Aims To End Stellies Hoodoo

Cape Town City head coach Eric Tinkler aims to end an unwanted record against Stellenbosch FC in the Western Cape Derby.

City are flying high after winning six league matches in a row for the first time in the club’s history. But winning against Stellenbosch on Friday could mean a lot more to them since they haven’t beaten them since December 2020.

Stellies, though, are also in good form, and they just reached their first-ever cup final after defeating Richards Bay in the Carling Knockout Cup semi-final.

Tinkler has been in charge of four derbies against Stellies and has lost three and drawn one but the former Bafana Bafana defender hopes their current form will end the unwanted run against their neighbours.

“Our record against them hasn’t been that brilliant over the past couple of seasons and obviously we looking to try and change that,” Tinkler told Cape Town City media.

“We’re coming of some very good wins, good performances but they themselves obviously tails up managed to get into the CarlingCup final

“So it’s gonna be good, interesting game to watch for the fans. Hopefully they come out in their numbers and hopefully we can put in a good performance against them, although we know it’s not gonna be an easy game.

“Especially that it’s a derby, we’re going there with confidence and belief that we can turn them over.”

Stellenbosch sit in fourth place with 20 points from 13 games, five points behind second-placed City.
