A late goal by Patrick Maswanganyi won Orlando Pirates three points in Saturday’s Soweto Derby.
Pule Mmodi had an early chance to put Chiefs ahead but Sipho Chaine stole the ball off his feet to deny the visitors.
Relebohile Mofokeng found himself in good position inside the Chiefs box in the 21st minute, but he took too many touches.
Tshegofatso Mabasa had a great chance to open the scoring after 31 minutes but he was denied by a last-ditch tackle by Inacio Miguel.
‘Sniper’ again missed a golden opportunity when he put his shot from outside the box past the post.
The game was missing a bit of individual quality, as the teams entered the break goalless.
Mabasa again had a good chance after 55 minutes, but his shot was saved by Bruce Bvuma – just two minutes before Mmodi had a powerful shot from outside the box parried by Chaine.
A few minutes later, Bvuma denied Mofokeng who had hit the ball with a beautiful volley.
Bvuma was again up to the task when Deon Hotto tested him from a tight angle in the 81st minute.
The game remained tightly-contested, with Nasreddine Nabi introducing new signings Thabo Cele and Glody Lilepo in the second half.
However, when it looked like the game ended without goals, Pirates received a late penalty, which Maswanganyi cheekily chipped over Bvuma to hand the Buccaneers the important three points.
