Update On City’s Chase Of Bolivian Striker

Cape Town City‘s interest in Bolivar FC striker Carmelo Algarañaz has gone down due to the high asking prize from his club.

Bolivian media had reported that the Citizens were close to concluding the deal with Algarañaz, but at this stage it doesn’t look like the deal will go through.

The 28-year-old made nine goal contributions in the 2023/24 season so far, coming from seven goals and two assists in 17 matches.

Algarañaz is currently with the Bolivian squad that is playing friendly matches in preparations for the upcoming Copa America that will kick off on 21 June.

This publication understands that the high fee Bolivar wants for Algarañaz remains the issue in concluding the deal.

The Bolivian striker joined Bolivar FC in January last year. He still has a year left in his contract.

The former Always Ready striker is familiar with African football, having played Egyptian side Ismaily SC for a short period before returning to Always Ready FC.

He had a breakout season in 2019, netting 14 goals in 18 league games for Always Ready and backed that up with 17 goals in 26 league matches in 2021.

He has featured 21 times for Bolivia, scoring two goals so far.
