Gaston Sirino was not supposed to be called offside in Kaizer Chiefs‘ defeat to SuperSport United, according to former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani.
Amakhosi were hammered 4-1 by Matsatsantsa in the drama-filled Betway Premiership encounter at FNB Stadium which also saw the Uruguayan been sent for two bookable offences.
Dissecting the incident, Hlungwani was critical of the fourth official who ruled the Chiefs star to be in an offside position when he received the ball from a Yusuf Maart cross.
“Here we see… the law says, ‘A player is in an offside position at the moment the ball is played or touched by one of his teammate’,” he said on Soccerzone.
“Now, if you have a look at it, you’ll see that at the moment the ball is played, we’re going to draw a line there and you’ll see Hlatshwayo [assistant referee] there raising [the flag] offside.
“But you’ll see that there’s a player who put him [Sirino] onside. You can see there that when we draw the line, Sirino there is one metre onside but then he was ruled offside.

“So, now, offside is not judged the moment the player receives the ball but at the moment the ball is played. That’s when we evaluate offisde.
“So, here, incorrect decision by Hlatshwayo to rule Sirino offside.”
