Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has addressed his striking options, explaining what Iqraam Rayners needs to do to earn a call-up.
The Mamelodi Sundowns forward, 30, made the preliminary squad but was left out of the final selection announced on Thursday.
Broos opted to retain Lyle Foster and Evidence Makgopa, who led the line during AFCON 2024, with Rayners serving as a standby option.
Despite praising Rayners’ form—14 goals and three assists in 25 matches—the Belgian coach stressed the importance of consistency.
With both Foster and Makgopa delivering and scoring at AFCON, Broos made it clear he won’t make changes unless another striker proves to be a stronger option.
“He’s performing good, we are talking about consistency and also for strikers are like that,” said Broos on SABC Sport.
“Lyle never disappointed me, I think in every game he played, he scored for the national team.
“Makgopa same thing, even though he’s not playing at Pirates at the moment. But I think he will come back.
“And people, two years ago, were asking me why you’re taking Makgopa, but you saw what he did at AFCON and the last AFCON, he scored against Cameroon, he’s always there, working hard. I will drop him before I see someone that does better than him.”
