Why PLK City Will Face Chiefs At Old PM Stadium

Polokwane Municipality officials have confirmed that the New Peter Mokaba Stadium is ready to host football matches for this season however it was Polokwane City who decided to take their match against Kaizer Chiefs to the old Peter Mokaba Stadium.  

The facility is home to Betway Premiership side Sekhukhune United and to an extend City who however prefer the old Peter Stadium, another facility belonging the same municipality.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup venue couldn’t host matches from the start of the 2026/27 season due to the pitch being rehabilitated. Babina Noko used Seshego Stadium for their home matches alongside Rise and Shine who later returned to their preferred venue after it was restored to host again.

The municipality’s manager for Sport and Recreation, Mantlako Sebaka told iDiski Times that though the venue is now ready and they would have liked to host it at the bigger stadium, it was the club who decided to take the game against Amakhosi next door.

“The New Peter Mokaba Stadium is ready pitch wise, facility wise and amenity wise,” Sebaka told iDiski Times.

“So, we are good to go. And secondly, the Polokwane City football club match against Kaizer Chiefs football club is going to be played at the old stadium, a decision that was taken by the club together with the PSL.

“For us we had hoped that the match could be played in the new stadium but nevertheless Polokwane City is a club member of the PSL and Polokwane municipality is not a club member.

“We are just a host city discharging our responsibility of ensuring that the people of Polokwane and the surrounding they get to enjoy the sport and sport development in general.”
