Stellenbosch in-form forward Iqraam Rayners is prohibited from playing against SuperSport United due to a clause from his deadline day transfer.
Rayners, 27, returned to Stellies from SuperSport on transfer deadline day and has enjoyed a blistering start to life at the Cape Winelands club.
With 15 goals and three assists in 11 games, he’s fired them to the Nedbank Cup semi-final and sixth place in the DStv Premiership.
“I am not allowed to play against SuperSport, this season – I’m not on loan, I’m permanent, Stellenbosch bought me from SuperSport,” Rayners told Thabiso Mosia on Radio 2000.
“From next season I can play – I don’t have anything to say about SuperSport, they were good to me, they’re a good team and doing [well] in the league, I’m happy for them. All I wish for them is to play Champions League this season.”
While Rayners won’t be available, head coach Steve Barker sees it as an opportunity for others to offer a selection headache ahead of their last-four clash against Sekhukhune United this weekend.
“I think it provides an opportunity for others before the semi-final, you know nearby and close it’s probably not the worst thing for him to get some rest and recovery and then be available for Sunday against Sekhukhune,” Barker told the club’s media department.
