AmaZulu FC midfielder Bongani Zungu has revealed that registration matters and adjusting at his new club prevented him from featuring against his former side Mamelodi Sundowns on Christmas Eve.
Zungu signed for Usuthu a week earlier than the fixture as a free agent having spent the better part of the first round of the 2023/24 season without a club after leaving the defending champions.
There was expectation leading up to the game that Usuthu lost 1-0, that Zungu would make an appearance, but didn’t.
Zungu spoke to iDiski Times writer Lethabo Kganyago in the latest edition, 187, of the newspaper where he admitted that he’d like to face his former side like any other player but also when he is fully fit.
“Yeah, well, obviously I would like to play, not just Sundowns, you know, all the games,” Zungu told iDiski Times.
“I’m working very hard to be in top shape but to answer your question, obviously, any player would want to play Sundowns when they are fully fit, so you can show your the quality on the day.
“But it’s not like something that is like deep, like that, you know what I’m saying, because each and every team we play against, when I get an opportunity, I have to humble myself and work for the team.
“So, yeah, the game against Sundowns my papers were not ready yet and also maybe I had like, two or three sessions. I didn’t know exactly how the team plays, and I thought our guys played very well that game, it’s just that Sundowns scored. But it’s not just about Sundowns but obviously playing against Sundowns I would love to be in top shape and compete.”
