AmaZulu FC coach Arthur Zwane says he still believes anything can happen regarding a top-three finish, despite his side experiencing recent setbacks.
Usuthu have not tasted victory in their last three matches, following draws against Sekhukhune United and Siwelele and a loss to Orlando Pirates. They are currently fourth, seven points behind Kaizer Chiefs.
Zwane noted that while their primary target has always been a top-four finish, they still fancied their chances for third place, as they harbour ambitions of playing continental football.
“Our target as a club has just always been position four, but we fencied our chances of going to position three and going to compete in Africa because we’re ambitious,” said Zwane.
“I still believe…football things, they happen in a mysterious way. Anything can happen at any given time. It’s all up to us. We just have to focus on ourselves and not worry about what people think of us.”
Despite the sting of a 3-0 loss to Pirates last week, Zwane remains defensive of his players’ quality, arguing that one poor performance does not suddenly erase the team’s capabilities or turn them into a bad side.
“And one game [against Pirates] will not make us a bad team overnight. It was a game where we played against a team that is by far better than us. Player for player, the bench, the quality,” he added.
“And as we are growing in stature, we are progressing very, very well. So, we don’t have to now rush ourselves and think now because we were amongst those big guns at some point and think we are up there.
“No, we are taking baby steps. We just have to appreciate what we’ve done so far.”
