Leverkusen had won the title unbeaten with Alonso, who also lifted the DFB Pokal and German Super Cup, and guided Bayer into the Europa League final during his time in Germany.
Now, ten Hag, who had been without a job since being sacked by United, has been unveiled as new head coach after penning a deal until 30 June 2027.
“Bayer 04 is one of the best clubs in Germany and also belongs to the extended European elite,” Ten Hag told his new club’s media team.
“The club offers excellent conditions, and the discussions with the management have impressed me greatly.
“I came to Leverkusen to confirm the ambitions that have grown in recent years. It is an exciting task to build something together and develop an ambitious team in this phase of change.”
Ten Hag won an FA Cup and English League Cup with United and had lifted three Eredivisie titles as well as two Dutch Cups during his time with Ajax Amsterdam.
