Ahly Reach 6th CAFCL Final In 7 Years

Al Ahly have reached their sixth CAF Champions League final in the last seven years after eliminating ES Tunis 4-0 on aggregate.

The record champions beat the visitors 1-0 on the night after collecting a 3-0 away win in the first leg, with Percy Tau again being instrumental in the win.

The Bafana Bafana winger picked out Kahraba after five minutes, who hit the crossbar with a superb volley. However, the goal wouldn’t have counted as he was marginally offside.

After 23 minutes, Tau picked up El Shahat with an inch-perfect pass and the winger calmly slotted the ball over Esperance keeper Mohamed Sedki Debchi.

El Shahat could’ve made it 2-0 just five minutes later but he blazed his shot over the bar after being set up by Ali Maaloul.

Al Ahly were in complete control of the game, with Esperance struggling to create any real chances.

In the second half, Al Ahly had over 70% of possession with the visitors not putting up much of a fight and both teams happy to see the game out.

Hamdi Fathi nearly had a chance to score the second of the night, but a cross after 60 minutes just sailed past him.

El Shahat had a late shot saved off the line after decent build-up play by Kahraba.

It’s Al Ahly’s sixth final after 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021 and 2022 – they won the 2020 and 2021 editions under Pitso Mosimane.

Al Ahly will find out on Saturday who between Mamelodi Sundowns and defending champions Wydad Athletic Club will face them in the double-headed final.
