AmaZulu Progress In CAFCL
AmaZulu are through to the next round of the CAF Champions League after beating Nyasa Big Bullets 3-1 in Malawi, to win the preliminary round tie 3-2 on aggregate.
AmaZulu had lost the first leg 1-0 at home in Durban, despite dominating the match. Prior to this game Usuthu had scored just one goal in 360 minutes of football, and goalscoring had been a concern for Benni McCarthy
However Usuthu got the perfect confidence booster at the Bingu National Stadium when they were awarded a penalty in just the third minute, and Bonginkosi Ntuli made no mistake from the spot.
And Ntuli made it 2-0 in the 11th minute, a beautiful strike with the back heel after being setup by Siphelele Mthembu.
At halftime it remained 2-0 to Usuthu.
Bullets tried to take the game to the visitors and pulled a goal back in the 48th minute when Henry Kabichi’s excellent free kick beat Veli Mothwa into the top right corner. That goal made it 2-2 on aggregate, with Usuthu still in the advantage on the away goal rule.
But AmaZulu made it 3-1 when Mthembu got himself on the scoresheet in the 55th minute, beating the goalkeeper from close range.
And while Big Bullets had gone all attack, with four strikers on, that goal knocked the wind out of the Malawians, though Mothwa did have a few saves to make as the Malawians try a direct approach.
A good turnaround from the Durban club, who progress to the next round in their debut season on the continent.
Next up for McCarthy’s team is DRC giants TP Mazembe, with a place in the group stages at stake for the winners.
