AmaZulu coach Benni McCarthy has revealed his Kaizer Chiefs dream, saying he wants to emulate their CAF Champions League campaign from last season.
Usuthu will take on Horoya in their second CAFCL group stage match, needing a win after losing the first match away at Raja Casablanca 1-0.
McCarthy stated he and his side were inspired by Chiefs’ run to the CAFCL final and hopes his side can have a similar campaign.
“I have high expectations for myself, high expectations for the team,” he said.
“That’s the nature of the job. You can’t have low expectations and expect to still be in charge of managing a football team.
“I think we have a squad good enough, when at full strength if we don’t triple ourselves with high chances of getting past these group stages.
“My desire is to try and emulate what Kaizer Chiefs did, when no one expected Kaizer Chiefs to go to the final. It would be amazing, I’m not saying we can do that but it’s a nice dream for us to want to achieve.
“A South African team, a team that no one expects to do anything, novices and very new in this CAF Champions League and then you go and surprise everybody.
“Kaizer Chiefs did that, it was the first the time they came out of the group stages of the CAF Champions League and they went all the way to the final. It was an amazing achievement, really special and inspiring.
“So we also want to do special things, we want to do things that inspire. Because the next South African team in the CAF Champions they also want to do that.
“We need to do things that inspire others, Kaizer Chiefs did inspire me and inspired my team.
“So that’s my aspiration to play this competition fearlessly and make the most of the opportunity and hopefully we get past Horoya on Friday.”
AmaZulu face the Guinean giants, who lost their Group B opener 1-0 to ES Setif, at 21:00 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium tonight.
