CAFCL Drawing Pots Confirmed

Mamelodi Sundowns are one of the exempted teams from the 2024/25 CAF Champions League preliminary round, while Orlando Pirates have been placed in Pot4.

The Confederation of African Football has disclosed the details for the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederations Cup draws, set to take place on Thursday on 14:00 in Cairo, Egypt.

“In the CAF Champions League, CAF received the official engagement of 59 clubs, while in the CAF Confederation Cup, 52 clubs are participating,” CAF stated.

“Accordingly, the 5 highest-ranked clubs in the official clubs ranking shall be exempted from the first preliminary round.

“The remaining 54 clubs shall play as of the 1st preliminary round and consist of the highest-ranked clubs (4), lowest-ranked clubs (14) and non-ranked clubs (36) according to the official clubs ranking.

“5 pots have been created for the 36 non-ranked clubs and the 14 lowest-ranked clubs, taking into account their geographical proximity.

“The exempted and highest-ranked teams are distributed geographically.”

Mamelodi Sundowns, join defending champions Al Ahly, as well as finalists ES Tunis, Petro de Luanda and TP Mazembe as one of the five exempted clubs.

Pirates, meanwhile, are in Pot 4, but will avoid the likes of Jwaneng Galaxy, Rangers FC and GDSE, who were also placed in the same pot.

In the CAF Confederations Cup, Sekhukhune United are among the 12 exempted teams, while Stellenbosch FC were placed in Pot 3.

“Accordingly, the 12 highest-ranked clubs in the official clubs ranking shall be exempted from the 1st preliminary round,” CAF confirmed.

“The remaining 40 clubs shall play as of the 1st preliminary round and consist of ranked clubs (3) and non-ranked clubs (37) according to the official clubs ranking. 

“3 pots of the 37 non-ranked teams have been created considering their geographical proximity. 

“The exempted and highest ranked teams are distributed geographically.”
