The draw for the 2022/2023 TotalEnergies CAF Interclub competitions Preliminary Rounds took place in Cairo.
Defending champions Wydad Athletic Club, Raja Casablanca (Morocco), Al Ahly (Egypt), TP Mazembe (DR Congo), Esperance (Tunisia) and Sundowns are all exempted from the CAF Champions League preliminary round.
Of the two South African representatives, Sundowns are among the six teams exempted from the CAFCL, while City enter the tournament in the first round..
Cape Town City were drawn against AS Otoho from Congo in the first round and will play the winners of Black Bulls (Mozambique) and Atletico Petroleos (Angola), if they would make the second round. The latter knocked Mamelodi Sundowns out of the competition in the quarter-finals last season.
Meanwhile, Sundowns will play the winners of the first-round tie between Volcan Club (Comoros) vs La Passs FC (Seychelles) in the second round after receiving a bye in the first round.
The first round first legs will take place from 09-11 September and the second legs will be played from 16-18 September. The second round first legs are scheduled for 7-9 October and the second legs from 14-16 October.
